Back to full fitness: The renovation of the Auwald Sportzentrum
After a devastating flood in June 2024, the Auwald Sportzentrum in the German town of Gundremmingen found itself facing a huge challenge. Extensive renovation work was required to make the site fit for sporting activities once again. In this interview, master painter Wolfgang Kraus from W & M Kraus GbR describes how he and his team completed the refurbishment work, and why SÜDWEST products played a central role.

Mr Kraus, what was the reason for the renovation of the Auwald Sportzentrum?
Massive damage was caused by flooding in Günzburg in June 2024. The Auwald Sportzentrum was one of the affected sites. In the wake of the devastation, it quickly became clear that extensive renovation work was required to make the building safe to use again in the long term.

When did work start and how was your team made up?
We started work on the renovation in November 2024 as a team of four.

Which areas were key to the refurbishment?
The wall areas have to stand up to high levels of stress, and there were also lots of doors, including fire doors.

Which SÜDWEST products were used on the walls?
We made a conscious decision to use the high-quality Profi XXL interior paint on the wall areas. Public buildings in particular require a lot of patching, and we didn’t want to use a cheap product. The paint was applied directly to the filled and levelled walls, which were very smooth. Then we had to consider glancing light. Profi XXL coped with this brilliantly. The coverage was amazing, too. We knew we had made the right choice.

So, what about the doors – what did they require?
The doors were challenging, because they were fire doors and the old coating was in a very bad state. We treated all the doors by hand with rollers. First, they were primed with SÜDWEST All-Grund. SÜDWEST All-Deck Metallic-Lack Satin was used as a finishing lacquer. The long open time was a real benefit, as it made the application process much easier. We applied around 25 litres in total. The results speak for themselves.

You’ve been working with SÜDWEST for many years. How did this come about?
I started my business 31 years ago. My son Michael has been helping me to manage operations since 2021. We have been working with SÜDWEST products for more than 30 years – and it all started with All-Grund and All-Deck. After all this time, we know that we can continue to put our faith in them.
